Class Today

Class was alright today.  However I still do not know what to do for the functional characteristics of lipstick.  That and the functional characteristics and the index are pretty similar.  It is also slightly difficult to combine two of my previous techniques without having many of the drawings looking the same. I wish we were able to do animals rather then objects. There would have been so many more options and variety within our imagery.

Lecture and Hallmark

I thought that today's lecture was monotonous and then to make us sit through the same lecture by the same person again for hallmark symposium was just overkill. It also did not really relate to major at all so I did not find it interesting. Overall the worst lecture so far, I think.

Last Class

I thought it was a lot of fun to use alternative materials to create our objects with.  I use a sponge, paper towels, my fingers, glue, paper laid over ink, and a few other different materials.  It was also definitely really messy, but it was not as monotonous as just doing pencil and marker drawings.

Graphic Design

I never really wanted to do graphic design.  My preferred major is the BFA in painting.  However I decided to double major in both, because I was not sure what I would really do with painting once I got out of school.  Graphic design majors tend to have many more job prospects then painting majors and probably make more money at least starting off.  So that is the reason I am double majoring with graphic design.

Our Project

We are now printing out our huge piece of paper for our poster. That paper costs $12. That's crazy. Everybody owes me $3.  The title looks way too small too which is lame.

Ideo and visual writing handout summaries

The short clip we watched waas very interesting and showed the people at IDEO and how they create new designs of objects. They were particularly trying to design a better, safer, more efficient shopping cart.  First they brainstormed and researched about the object.  Then they decided designs that they liked best and were split into groups to all make their own prototypes.  Finally they all came together and decided on a design and made a prototype.  Finally they took their design to different stores to see how people reacted to it and how they liked it.

The visual writing handout just basically explained different ways to brainstorm about an idea.  It talked about mind maps, concept maps, free writing, brain writing, and word lists.  All of these things I think are very useful when one is in the brainstorming process.
